Serverus Jjumba; And the Grace to be a Priest

By Lambert Brian Rusoke

Its 6th July 2019,and at the Kitovu Sports Arena,a new dawn has set in at the helm of the Catholic Diocese of Masaka. Out steps  Bishop John Baptist Kaggwa, and in comes Rt Rev.Serverus Jumba,a man God has called on to continue with the baton, in this marathon relay of faith.

At the World Youth Day celebrations in Rio de Janeiro ,2018,Pope Francis, told the bishops that they should not be bishops of the airport, but bishops of the dioceses. He doesn’t want them to be jet-setters,always flying off to Rome and to meetings and conferences. They should be home with their people. That they should be priests and bishops who have the,”smell of the people’.

No better home for Bishop Serverus, than Masaka Diocese ,a place he has called home, since coming to the world in  1962.A place ,that nurtured his leadership skills, learning and coordinating with the best around him, especially his family, but most important place where his calling to be a priest ,was first witnessed, as his late father escorted him to the gates of the seminary, which eventually turned out to be the last time,he ever saw his dad.How sad it was for the young seminarian. Yet this was only going to be a great motivation to serve the Lord ,as a priest.
As the celebrations tickle in,the new Bishop surely knows, that work is just getting started, having to fit into a position for the very first time, and carrying all expectations on his shoulders.
But ,isn’t this the very reason he  accepted to carry on with God’s work?

In his book,’’The Grace to be a Priest’,Dominician priest Romanus Cessario, opines that, the vacation to  priesthood comes to a man as both a gift and mystery. That God chooses priests to serve as both instruments of his will and spiritual fathers .They fulfill this divine mission in various ways. They become chaste lovers, faithful friends, obedient sons and shinning lights in God’s holy church.

Bishop  Jjumba ,with all his practical experience as a priest in the Masaka area, has an insight into tackling the challenges that ‘’his’’ people face, and surely has the connections to tap into opportunities for economic prosperity and sustainability, for the youth in particular.

Those that have associated with him shall agree, that here is a Bishop, that shall ,’’Smell His People’.
